Australian country music star Amber Lawrence curated a blockbuster country music night on 23 May 2025 for the first night of the Vivid Sydney Supper Club at Marys Underground.
Opening the show, she was succeeded by 17-time Golden Guitar winner and master storyteller Luke O’Shea, who was as entertaining (and funny) as ever. After a break, short sets followed from powerhouse vocalist Katie Jayne, ‘singing stockman’ William Alexander and country-folk artist Felicity Dowd, who has just been announced as an Americanafest artist.
The night flew by - three hours of music that seemed to be over too quickly, and that was because every minute of it was entertaining. Given Amber’s success in curating this line-up, including how the night was run, I hope she considers running her own festival soon!
The surprise packet of the night was, as she said, William Alexander. I’ve seen him play live before and admittedly the acoustics in the venue weren’t great so his between-songs banter wasn’t that audible, so perhaps that’s why I missed this the first time around, but here’s the thing to know: he’s not only a wonderful vocalist but he’s REALLY funny. As dry as the Simpson Desert. Not that I want him to leave music for comedy but he could …
Any one of these artists, though, is worth your time and attention if they’re performing live near you. It was a terrific evening, the like of which we don’t usually have in Sydney CBD. Anyone want to start a country music club in town? I’m thinking maybe we should. In the meantime, you can see Amber Lawrence play at Sunset Bash at Penrith Panthers in September, and elsewhere in between, and Luke O’Shea has several dates coming up too. Class acts and legends both.
